The Razor-Edge Concept: One Small Shift Can Change Everything

When I stepped into the room at our Builders Coach Auckland One Day Intensive earlier this month, I knew exactly what I wanted to share with the builders and business owners in the room: the Razor-Edge Concept.

It’s an idea I believe is highly relevant — not only in sport, but in business and in life. Because once you understand your razor edge and learn how to play to your strengths, you realise something powerful:

You are always just one decision away from changing your trajectory.

The 0.13-Second Difference

The concept comes from Bob Proctor’s book Born Rich.

At the 1936 Montreal Olympics, eight men lined up for the 100m sprint. The difference between first and last place? Just 0.13 seconds.

Think about that.

The winner walked away with glory, medals, endorsements, opportunities. The last competitor — separated by less than the blink of an eye — walked away with nothing.

That razor-thin gap is what separates those who thrive from those who merely survive.

And it’s the same in business. One sharp edge — one decision, one system, one habit — can completely transform your results.

Lessons from the Legends

What made Auckland so special was not just the content we delivered — it was who we shared the stage with.

Having rugby greats Piri Weepu and Duane Vermeulen in the room was nothing short of incredible.

  • Piri spoke with raw honesty about the wolfpack mentality — how unity and shared focus can drive peak performance.

  • Duane shared insights on resilience and leadership under pressure, drawing from his experiences at the very highest level of competition.

These weren’t just stories; they were lessons from people who have lived at the edge of human performance. To have them sharing so openly with our builders was a once-in-a-lifetime experience — and it lifted the whole day.

It created the perfect stage for me to introduce the Razor-Edge Concept — because whether in sport or business, the pursuit of excellence comes down to finding that one edge that changes everything.

What Razor Edge Looks Like in Business

In the room, I challenged the builders: “What’s your razor edge? What’s the one thing that tips the scales in your favour?”

Because it’s not always the big changes that matter most. Often, it’s:

  • Hiring one admin person to free up your time.

  • Outsourcing bookkeeping so you can focus on profit instead of paperwork.

  • Shifting your mindset from “I can’t afford it” to “I can’t afford not to.”

  • Or getting in early on tools like AI before competitors catch up.

We ran a live AI exercise — analysing builders’ niches and strengths to uncover new opportunities. Watching the clarity and excitement that came out of just a few inputs was mind blowing. That’s the razor edge in action: clarity, precision, and leverage.

A Thought for You

You don’t need to rebuild your business from the ground up. You don’t need to wait for perfect market conditions. You don’t need to win by a mile.

You just need to sharpen your edge.

Because the difference between dominating your niche and being overlooked isn’t always obvious. But it’s always there.

Just like the 0.13 seconds that separated Olympic history, one sharp edge can define the next chapter of your business.
